Talmadge has won Old Fort Days twice, 20. As of 2018, that record has not been broken. In 1995 Talmadge set a new record, winning the most futurities in one season, with Rare Ghost. Notable barrel racers that have benefited from Talmadge’s assistance are NFR Qualifier Lindsey Hayes Old Fort Days winner Kevin Rooks and IPRA Champion, NFR Qualifier, and NBHA World Champion, Jane Melby along with many more who have succeeded with his help. Through numerous schools, seminars, and lectures across the United States, Canada, and Brazil he has been able to accomplish this. He wanted to encourage more riders to participate in the sport and share his expertise with others. Many people these days don’t realize NBHA was Talmadge’s vision and creation. In 1991, he won over $200,000 which was an accomplishment making him the highest money winning trainer for futurity aged horses and boosted his lifetime earnings to over ONE MILLION DOLLARS.ĭuring these years, Talmadge formulated new goals that lead to the founding of the National Barrel Horse Association. Talmadge was the high money winner seven times and the winner of six world championships from 1987 to 2013. ![]() He followed that in 1986 by winning the Year-end standings and becoming the first barrel racer to earn more than $100,000 in a single season. ![]() The very first year he raced, he finished in the TOP TEN of the year-end standings. Talmadge fulfilled his dream of becoming a professional barrel racer in 1985. The only restriction was the age of the horses. Men, women and children could all compete. When Barrel Racing Futurities began, it wasn’t just for women. Talmadge had grown up participating in playday events which men, women, and children were all allowed to participate in. At the time he made his decision, men were not allowed to participate in the sport.
